Description:This primer on musculoskeletal imaging for physical therapists and physical therapy students is supplemented with a CD-ROM that contains over 200 images and additional information.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide physical therapists with a user friendly and easy to comprehend resource describing the role of imaging in clinical decision making. Given the expanding role of physical therapy practice, the book fulfills a need.
Audience:The primary audience includes physical therapy students and practicing physical therapists. Two of the authors teach in the division of physical therapy in the College of Health Sciences at the University of Kentucky and the third author is Associate Professor of Radiologic Sciences at Southern Illinois University.
Features:The book introduces procedures underlying the capture of musculoskeletal imaging, in particular basic plain film radiography. However, a section also covers other techniques such as ultrasound, computed tomography, and MRI. Images from MRI are displayed throughout. Coverage of major body regions defines each of the major chapters. In addition, there is a chapter on imaging of the brain and a chapter on long bone fractures. Crisp images, excellent line drawings, and tables provide information clearly and the writing is concise and appropriate for the audience. Case studies and clinical implications appear at the end of each chapter. The CD-ROM displays excellent images and effectively highlights pathologies in color. The book does not show patient positioning, but radiographs are of common views.
Assessment:This is a need to know reference to orient therapists to the role of imaging procedures. Although not as in depth as other books for this audience (i.e. Fundamentals of Musculoskeletal Imaging, 2nd edition, McKinnis (F.A. Davis, 2005)), it is a useful resource and offers nice clinical pearls to apply the information presented.
