Description:This seventh edition of a concise, well written book on renal physiology continues the legacy of the book as a major contributor in the field. The previous edition was published in 2004.
Purpose:The stated purpose is to present core material in a concise, accurate manner that is not burdened with detail and point out the logical connection between events at the cellular level and their consequences for the wellbeing of the body. The authors have done an excellent job of continuing the high quality of previous editions. This update is needed given the advances made in the last five years.
Audience:The authors do not state an intended audience, but it is at least directed to experienced science majors and most appropriately directed at allied health and medical students. This would also be a good review for residents and any clinicians needing an update in basic renal function. The authors are accomplished educators and recognized authorities in their fields.
Features:The 10 chapters present concepts related to basic renal function, clearance, transport mechanisms, water and electrolyte processing, and acid base processing by the kidney. Each chapter begins with a list of objectives followed and concludes with a list of key concepts and study questions. The study questions are answered at the end of the book. The strength of the book lies in the way it concisely describes the current understanding of the way the kidney accomplishes the basic tasks that regulate the composition of body fluids.
Assessment:This well written book is an excellent review of renal function and is one of the best concise reviews of the topic. It would not function well as an introductory book, as it leaves out many of the details in the interest of brevity.
