Description: The 9th edition of "Hole's Essentials of Human Anatomy and Physiology" provides a foundational, yet comprehensive, overview of human anatomy and physiology. The previous edition was published in 2003.
Purpose: The purpose of this text, as stated by the authors, is to provide basic anatomy and physiology content in an interesting and readable format. An understanding of anatomy and physiology is crucial for students pursuing a career in any of the health professions. Clear, concise material promotes understanding and provides the foundation on which learning can advance to a higher level. The authors meet their objectives.
Audience: The authors note this book is written for students planning careers in a variety of fields such as health care, science or athletics. I agree and believe it is particularly useful at the beginning of these programs where it is necessary to lay a solid foundation of understanding. The title uses the word "essentials" and accurately portrays the level of complexity presented in this text. The authors' biographies attest to their competency to write this material.
Features: All human body systems are covered in this text. Related topics such as nutrition, genetics, and pregnancy are also included and enhance the material. Each chapter contains beautifully-drawn illustrations and actual photographs of selected body structures. The many tables and figures provide a concise and integrated view of difficult concepts. Particularly appealing is the use of short stories and "Topics ofInterest" found within each chapter that enhance understanding for the reader and provide "real-world" examples of how anatomy and physiology is related to real people and events.
Assessment: I have taught anatomy and physiology to new nursing students for many years and have always used editions of this text. I therefore have the ability to compare the last 6 editions. This text has always been clearly-written with wonderful artwork and photographs that enhance understanding for the learner. Every edition has improved in some aspect and each one has always been updated to include the latest advancements in the field. Of all the A&P texts I have seen, my course textbook selection continues to be this one.
