Using a "rhetoric of walking" and elaborating a Talmudic interpretive formula about the disposition of boundaries, Newton (English, U. of Texas, Austin) explores the literary landscape of "elsewhere." The writers he studies are a disparate company of 20th-century memoirists and fabulists from the Levant and East Central Europe, who traverse the boundaries of several literary forms, such as diary, memoir, fiction and travelogue. Newton pairs the texts so that they speak to one another in mutually revelatory ways. The encounters become acts of interpretation in themselves, participating in a drama of sojourn, belonging and reading. Annotation ©2005 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
