This is one of those grand exhibition catalogs that attempts both to illustrate the objects shown and to create a lasting scholarly work independent of the exhibition's duration. Both aims are achieved to some degree, but the marriage of the two is uneasy. Published in association with the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA); Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso, Mexico City (where the exhibition shows through May 2007); and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the catalog is the work of curator Rishel (PMA) and scholar Stratton-Pruitt. Readable chapters by 20 international scholars examine the production of paintings, furniture, metalwork, sculpture, and textiles in the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking regions of South and Central America between 1492 and 1820. Interesting chapters on the influence of Africa and Asia on the Latin American art exhibited only underscore how the exhibition is really an exploration of the European-derived art favored by the Catholic Church and upper-class colonial patrons. The conglomerate nature of the volume makes it difficult to gain an overview, although the individual chapters are valuable probings of their subjects. Unfortunately, many of the 400-plus color photos are very small in relation to the masses of blank space on the pages. Best for academic and larger public libraries.
