In this board book, each spread is devoted to an assemblage of animals such as pets, those found in the barnyard, zoo, or in the water. Then the text suddenly switches and kids are asked to name the colors of a particular set of animals or to match up an animal with a color square. Then the book shifts again to address animal patterns, noises and, finally, relating babies to their mothers. Next there is a discussion of a variety of animal features and a challenge to guess what an animal is by looking at a part. I thought from the title that the book was going to focus on baby animals but that is not the case. Crisp photographs and lots of attractive items will appeal to young readers and provide plenty for child and caregiver to discuss, but it is for more sophisticated kids. 2001, St Martin's Press,
