Reviewer:Luis F. Escobar, MD, MS(St. Vincent Hospital and Health Care Center)
Description:This is a wonderful basic genetics textbook with helpful online resources written with teaching in mind. It is a well-planned and well-written educational tool.
Purpose:It provides an introduction to basic principles that enables the discussion of more complex topics such as gene therapy and complex patterns of inheritance. This magnificent work is a unique tool for teaching that follows a logical sequence appropriate for understanding human genetics and human genetic disorders.
Audience:The book is written in such an easy to read manner for basic genetics courses that undergraduate and graduate students will find it invaluable. However, experienced practitioners will also find it helpful, not only with concepts that can be applied to daily practice, but also in preparation for board review courses and certification. Students in biology and genetics counseling, house staff physicians, and other healthcare providers should consider this book essential for learning and review of medical genetics. Teachers in medical genetics courses (undergraduate or graduate) may find it a good foundation.
Features:With the addition of the online resources, readers have access to updates and downloadable art that can be used for learning and teaching. Throughout the book, the symbol "www" alerts readers to additional online content. The art is well thought out and the book is beautifully illustrated with easy to understand figures. Particularly interesting are the clinical commentaries at the end of each section that place the information in context for clinical readers.
Assessment:There are very few books that compare to this one. It presents complex information in an easy to read format. As John Opitz notes in the foreword, the authors of this book have succeeded admirably.
