This is a comprehensive textbook designed to help the beginning practitioner conduct thorough physical examinations. A balance of body system compartmentalization with a holistic approach to the patient's needs is provided. This edition is updated from the last version published in 1995. The purpose is to offer guidance to the beginning practitioner in the areas of history taking and physical examination. The authors emphasizes the relationship between the practitioner and the patient, stressing that each patient is unique. Given the changes associated with today's healthcare reform, focusing on the patient rather than on the condition is an extremely worthy objective. This book is written for the entry-level practitioner in all healthcare specialties. Each chapter includes approaches and techniques relevant to infants, children, adolescents, older adults, and pregnant women where applicable. The book is authored by physicians and doctorally-prepared registered nurses. The authors begin with the importance of establishing a rapport with the patient and discuss the need to understand cultural diversity as well as incorporate it into the history-taking process. Each chapter includes a review of anatomy and physiology, followed by pertinent health history considerations as well as common abnormalities associated with that body system. Guidelines for putting all the pieces of physical assessment together are provided and the authors challenge the reader to incorporate critical thinking principles into the process. The color photographs and the CD-ROM aid understanding. This is a well-written book full of the information necessary to begin the physical examination process. At times, the authors' attempts to incorporate all stages of the life cycle become a bit overwhelming, making it difficult to focus on the broader examination process. In this edition they incorporate issues facing patients and healthcare practitioners today.
