Purpose:The primary purpose was to produce a guide for efficient dissection of the entire human body within the time frame allocated to human gross anatomy courses. The second purpose was to provide students with clear expectations of the anatomic structures to be dissected and learned. Although there are many dissection guides, this one is the first to correlate and consolidate the information and images from the most popular anatomy texts and atlases into one concise format. From this perspective, the authors meet their objectives.
Audience:This book is written primarily for students in their first year human anatomy dissection course. It will also serve as a ready and rapid reminder of anatomical structures in later years when studying for board exams and residency training. While entirely adequate for medical and health professions students, the book does not have enough in-depth dissections of the facial, oral, and maxillary regions to be of use in a detailed dental anatomy dissection course. The authors have extensive experience in teaching human anatomy to these student groups.
Features:The book takes a regional approach, guiding students through dissection techniques sufficient to explore and learn the intricate details of the human body. Multiple illustrations accompany each set of directions, to assist in guiding students though their labs. The book lays open nicely on standard dissection table book stands, minimizing page turning. The only shortcomings of this book are in the construction. The pages are perforated for removal, but they will easily become separated from the book during exposure to moisture and greasy gloves during the dissection experience. Thicker or laminated pages would resolve this problem. Additionally, the nerves in the drawings of the muscles are difficult to see in many of the images, requiring moving of the book to better lighting angles.
Assessment:This is the type of book I have thought many times of writing myself. I would prefer bolder drawings, but the original drawings are available in the referenced texts as well as on the Student Consult web site. This is the best published dissector I have seen to this point in my career, and we are considering replacing our home written dissector with this one.
