This second edition describes the fundamentals and applications of radiation therapy physics at a readable level. It replaces the 15-year-old first edition. The purpose is to explain the fundamentals of radiation physics and the application of these fundamentals to the treatment of cancer patients by radiation. This book is needed to address the progress in the field since the earlier edition. The book meets the authors' objectives by providing extensive new material in a readable fashion. The book is intended for radiation physicists, radiation oncologists, and radiation therapists. It will be used widely as a principal text for instruction of radiation oncology residents and radiation therapy students. It is difficult to write a single general textbook that can educate and enlighten these three audiences simultaneously. The combination of clear text, good illustrations, workable problems, and extensive references should help keep all three groups interested. The authors are both highly credible authorities in radiation therapy physics. The line drawn illustrations are excellent. The gray-scale reproductions and images are unfortunately of poor quality and are difficult to interpret. The references are extensive and range from historical to state-of-the-art. The overall appearance of the book is very good. The color cover is eye-catching. Unique features include highlighted examples in the text and relatively simple problems at the end of each chapter, reinforcing concepts from the chapter. I recommend this book without hesitation. The technical material is up-to-date; the description of theory and techniques is very readable; the examples are relevant, and the problems arehelpful in understanding the material in each chapter. The second edition is clearly an excellent replacement for the first.
