Simple text introduces the process of growing and havesting apples.
Set up like real reference books this series entitled "Harvesttime" is a subset of the larger series of "Welcome Books." In each book, young readers will find a table of contents, the text and accompanying pictures, a list of new words, along with definitions, that were highlighted in the text, and a page with a few references to books and a web site to find out more on the topic. The final page contains an index and a very brief write-up about the author and the reading consultants who reviewed the text. The text is a compilation of declarative sentences some of which are a bit banal and don't really tell the reader much. Readers do learn that apples grown on trees and that they are harvested in the fall. Not all apples are read and that is a good point, however, the final page showing a kid with an apple shows him eating a bright red one. The stock photos that fill each page are appropriate to the text, and very young and new readers will feel a sense of accomplishment having completed the straightforward text and looked at the photographs. 2004, Scholastic, Ages 3 to 6.
