This volume examines Hong Kong cinema in transnational, historical, and artistic contexts.
The 13 articles in this anthology grew out of a 1997 University of Illinois conference of scholars from Hong Kong and the US. Topics include Kung Fu cinema; 1960s modernity and youth culture; 1970s New Wave; the cinemas of John Woo, Michael Hui, and Ann Hui; and various themes devoted to identity. A selected bibliography of studies about Hong Kong cinema written in English ends the volume. Fu and Desser teach cinema studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Annotation c.
