During 1970-71, Parman (California State U., Fullerton) lived in Ciall, Scotland to conduct ethnographic research on the crofting communities of the Highlands and Islands, which resulted in the first publication of this text in 1990. The second edition updates the analysis of crofting, explores further the links among crofting, Gaelic-speaking, the "Gaelic Renaissance" occurring in Scotland and among Scottish communities abroad, and Scottish nationalism. Parman also updates the status of crofting as a form of land tenure, with discussion of the "decrofting" statutes passed by the Crofters Commission, and assesses the symbolic significance of the movement to promote crofting as an ecologically sound economic practice in the EU.
