Featuring simple text and incredible full-color photography, the Planet Earth Reader series connects kids with all the facts they want to know in an easy-to-read format. This installment focuses on the animals of the world's oceans, examining the intricate balance of life in these unique depths.
Part of the "Scholastic Reader" series, this book is listed at level three, aimed at readers in grades one through three with some independent reading skills. Each two-page spread contains abut 50 to 70 words of text and one or two photographic illustrations. Special vocabulary words such as habitat, algae, and scavengers, are printed in red and are defined in a glossary at the back of the book. Among the creatures included in the book are: Phytoplankton, Zoo Plankton, Blue Whale, Whale Shark, Green Sea Turtle, Nautilus, Megamouth Shark, Manta Ray, Whitetip Shark, Sailfish, Comb Jelly, Siphonophore, Octopus, Squid, Viperfish, Anglefish, Sea Cucumber, and Spider Crab. The book is illustrated with color photographs which, unfortunately, are not always sharp or detailed. The book provides a brief introduction for young science students to the variety of life in the ocean. Reviewer: Phyllis J. Perry
